Christmas granola gift jars are thoughtful handmade food gifts that anyone would like to receive. You’ll love this easy, clustery cranberry granola recipe with free printable tags!
Every year I enjoy making homemade food gifts to have on hand during the Christmas season. I can grab what I’ve prepared to bring to parties as hostess gifts or gift them to neighbors and teachers.
Sweetened dried cranberries and flaked coconut add a festive touch to these homemade granola gifts.
The recipient can enjoy the granola and then have a lovely jar to keep afterward.
I have made two versions of the tag for you: one reads “Cranberry granola” with a cranberry graphic, and the other reads “Homemade granola” with a Christmas tree graphic. This way you have some options.
The best part—the recipe is so easy to make!
The secret ingredient in this granola recipe is actually flour (which can be in the form of sourdough starter).
The starch in the flour is what allows the granola to clump together the way it does.
Tips for Making Christmas Granola Gift Jars
- This recipe is by weight so it’s quick to pour everything into a bowl without measuring cups. I like to melt the coconut oil in a large microwave-safe bowl and then add everything else into the same bowl.
- One batch of granola is enough to fill two Weck 745 1-liter tulip jars (assuming you do add the cranberries and coconut). Increase the recipe accordingly to make the number of homemade granola gifts you need.
- The granola will clump best if you don’t stir it during baking or while it’s cooling. Allow the homemade granola to cool completely before you try to pack it in the jars to prevent condensation from forming.
- Fabric scissors work best to cut ribbon cleanly.
Recommended Equipment & Supplies
- Digital kitchen scale (this is my favorite one, but any one will work)
- Half sheet pan
- Parchment paper
- Glass jars (I prefer 1-liter tulip Weck jars which are about 5¾ inches tall, or you could also use 32oz mason jars for mason jar granola gifts.)
- White card stock to print tags
- Ribbon, twine, or raffia to tie around the jars
- Paper cutter
- Hole punch

How to Make Christmas Granola Gift Jars – Step-by-Step
Step 1 – Mix the Granola
Start by preheating your oven to 325°F with a rack set in the center. Line a rimmed half sheet pan with parchment paper.
To start the homemade granola, whisk together melted coconut oil, sourdough starter (flour and water will have the same affect if you don’t have a starter), brown sugar, real maple syrup, kosher salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, pure vanilla extract, and ground flax seeds.
If you are using starter, it can take a little stirring to help it dissolve in the mix. Otherwise, the ingredients come together quickly.
Finally, stir in your old-fashioned oats until they are evenly coated, but reserve the dried cranberries and coconut flakes for after baking.
Pour the unbaked granola out onto the prepared pan and disperse it evenly into a single layer.
Leave the granola clumpy on the pan (as pictured) instead of pressing it flat against the baking surface.
Step 2 – Bake the Homemade Granola
It will take around 40 minutes to bake. You shouldn’t stir the granola while it bakes, but you can rotate the pan if needed.
You’ll know it’s done when it just starts to take on some color (specifically the granola around the edges of the pan.)
After you remove the pan from the oven, sprinkle on the sweetened dried cranberries and unsweetened coconut flakes.
I appreciate the pop of color that these ingredients add.
Allow the granola to cool completely on the tray.
Step 3 – Pack the Granola into Christmas Granola Gift Jars
Once the granola is cool, you may find you actually need to break it up a little into smaller clumps. Fill your two jars and affix the gaskets, lids, and clips.
Print out your tags onto white card stock and cut them out using a paper cutter. (I chose not to leave the borders on the tags for my jars.)
Use a hole punch to cut the hole in each tag.
Tie the tags on with your ribbon of choice (or whatever material you’re using) and finish with a knot or bow.
Happy gifting!
Christmas Granola Gift Jars
Christmas granola gift jars are thoughtful handmade food gifts that anyone would like to receive. You'll love this easy, clustery cranberry granola recipe and the free printable tags.
Ingredients
- 70g unrefined cold pressed coconut oil, melted
- 95g sourdough starter* (or 47g flour + 47g water)
- 40g light or dark brown sugar
- 100g real maple syrup
- 5g kosher salt
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 25g (2T) ground flax seed
- 375g old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup sweetened dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup unsweetened flaked coconut
Additional Supplies
- Two 1-liter tulip Weck jars
- White card stock for printing tags
- Paper cutter
- Hole punch
- Ribbon, twine, or raffia to tie on jars
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F with a rack set in the center. Line a rimmed half sheet pan with parchment paper and set aside.
- In a large bowl, add coconut oil, sourdough starter (or flour and water), brown sugar, maple syrup, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and flax seed. Whisk until well combined. Stir in rolled oats until they are evenly coated in the wet mixture.
- Pour mixture onto prepared half sheet pan and spread into a single layer (leave the granola in its natural clumpy form instead of pressing it flat against the pan). Bake for 40 minutes or until the granola on the outside edges of the pan just begins to take on some color (you may rotate pan halfway through baking, if necessary, but do not stir the granola).
- Remove pan from oven and sprinkle the top of the granola with the dried cranberries and flaked coconut. Leave the granola undisturbed on the pan until it has cooled completely.
- Fill clean jars with the granola, breaking any large clumps of granola into smaller clusters, if necessary. Place rubber gaskets and lids on jars and clip them closed.
- Print free tags onto white cardstock and cut them out using a paper cutter. Use a hole punch to cut the holes for the ribbons.
- Tie ribbon (or whatever material you like) around the jars, tying the tags on as you tie the bows. Store at room temperature until gifting.
Notes
*Sourdough discard is fine as long as it's not too old/acidic and the starter is already established.
- The granola will clump best if you don't stir it during baking or while it's cooling. Allow the homemade granola to cool completely before you try to pack it in the jars to prevent condensation from forming.
- Fabric scissors work best to cut ribbon cleanly.
